Today I interviewed someone on Capitol Hill about the shutdown, and tomorrow I head to DC. I feel that the interview went well, and I am excited to share how I use the information I wrote down. Going to DC means I can learn more about the current status of the government and see my friend before the Halloween weekend takes over.

The interview helped me step outside my comfort zone of fashion and runway looks. In all honesty, I am more invested in politics than I let on. I spent most of my high school years learning about the vast ways my hometown is connected to the outside world. For the longest time I doubted my ability to write a politically charged article, but I don’t think that way anymore. I now know that politics is just as random as fashion.

I like to be aware of everything going on in the country, too. To me, being an informed citizen is voting and accepting continuous learning. One of my favorite frames of mind in education school was the idea that we are never done learning. When I decide to stop working, my eagerness to understand our changing world will continue.

Attempting to absorb as much as possible is a significant commitment you can make to yourself. I want to immerse myself in everything—texts, photos, memories, songs, and pieces of art. This desire extends into how I understand my public persona.

I recently recorded a video for the 100,000 Strong Program. The program was started in 2009 by Barack Obama, and I am always excited to think about how I was apart of this program: https://2009-2017.state.gov/100k/

I began writing down what I was going to say and found that I could go on for hours and hours about my experience with the program. Now that I am writing my own history, I am lucky enough to share these stories with my classmates, family, and friends.

DC tomorrow,

TJl
