I marched down Fifth Avenue for three hours today. The protest began at the start of Bryant Park and ended where Flatiron splits the city east and west. I shouted at the top of my lungs, danced in the rain, and stomped down the streets. Now that I am home, all I want to do is put a record on, pour myself a tall glass of water, and bask on my self-cooling bed. Here’s what I am listening to.
I Saved The World Today—Eurythmics
Annie Lennox is not only one of my favorite artists to turn on after a long day, but she’s also a strong political activist. I have followed her on Instagram for several years now, and it has been a joy of mine to see her post her opinion on the world’s issues. The band’s later albums have found their way onto my Apple Music account. I love hearing her harmonic voice on the radio.
Live to Tell—Madonna
Madonna is one of those artists that writes music for all moods and feelings. I frequent a lounge in the Lower East Side, and they are always playing her. Last weekend they played “Justify My Love,” and we all slow-danced to the sensual way her vocals traveled to our ears. Her discography is extensive and always makes an appearance on my Instagram feed. Just the other day her performance of “Live to Tell” during her Confessions tour was recommended to me, and I began to realize just how cool her performances are.
Malibu—Hole
I love this song. One of my favorite shops (also in the Lower East Side) has many posters of Courtney Love, and I always smile at how retro she feels now. Her history is complicated, but I like to imagine how much joy writing this song brought her. I have never been to Malibu, California, but I know that when I do decide to visit, I will roll down my windows—hand surfing the wind and blasting Malibu. Another video that keeps popping up on my Instagram feed is the video of Courtney interrupting Madonna’s interview with Kurt Loder at the 1995 VMAs. The live interviews from the 90s have me sitting in front of my computer, basking in the outfits and quirkiness of the artists.
Bye, Madonna, did I bum you out? Are you pissed at me?
