I haven’t touched my computer in a few days. Recently, I have been thinking of ways to improve my content. I met with some other creatives and decided that I will continue the newsletter while also starting to produce more interview-based content. I am always interested in the stories people I interact with have to share, so why not integrate interviews into my work?

I was asked recently what I will wear when I go back home to Iowa this week. I rolled my eyes as I prepared to tell this person the truth—I don’t know. Going home to Iowa doesn’t mean I don’t wear what I love. The fact that the area I am from is conservative doesn’t mean I have to dampen my style.

However, the last time I returned home, people stared at me as if I were an alien from Mars. One person complimented my outfit, but the rest just stared. I don’t believe I was wearing anything outrageous, but I know that what is normal in New York is abnormal in Iowa.

I believe that if I present well and own it, people will follow. Over my time in New York, I have learned that delivery is as important as clothing in an outfit. Indeed, while the large Gucci bag draped over my shoulder may be unconventional for a visit to Iowa, I carried it with the same confidence and poise as I would my own head.

I also like to think that there is someone among the crowd of residents who is genuinely interested in my perspective. For many young people in Iowa, there is a lack of belonging. Many of my friends have since left Muscatine for something bigger and brighter. When I come home, I think of it as an opportunity to share not only my story but also my message.

I contemplate the people I meet in Iowa every day. A lot of them are hardworking, passionate, and loyal. Some of them talk to me about their dreams, and that makes me proud. In all of their hearts, there is a drive to do and be good. There isn’t much to do in Muscatine besides think. When I return home, I begin to think more. New York is so fast-paced that there’s almost no time to process. In Iowa, I spend most of my time processing. Processing on those long walks along the river.
