I literally just got home from a dinner with several stylists, artists, and creative directors. I thought I was running late when I arrived at 4:40 instead of the scheduled 4:30 start time, but I was wrong. Many guests showed up two or three hours late, and the food wasn’t served until after the 7 PM sunset.

The food was delicious, and I am stuffed. We enjoyed hot peppers, cheese and crackers, and other finger foods. The chef for the night was somebody I am working closely with. He prepared a hearty soup and roasted potatoes. The soup was incredibly delicious, and to my surprise, it barely left a dent in my stomach.

I was allowed one glass of wine, which I did not choose to take. Red wine is too bitter for my liking, so I stuck to water. I found that not taking the drink helped prevent me from falling asleep like I did at the last event I attended. Wine knocks me on the ground, and I wanted to be present for the conversations the group was having, so I abstained.

During this event, we sat around and passed the remote to somebody with a new song idea. The chef, who was also the host, wanted every song to follow a pattern. He is into Tom Petty, so he picked “Free Fallin’” to start the game off. I continued the Tom Petty train and went for “Don’t Come Around No More.” The music video for that song is captivating. I like the costumery.

The music inspired us, along with the other guests, to go out dancing after we finished our drinks. Everybody shouted “yeah,” and we all shuffled down the block to a place I have been to twice in the last weekend. One thing to know about the host is that he will make his presence known anywhere we go.

“I am Russell Labosk, former creative director of Men’s Vogue, everyone!”

His fierce energy scored us free drinks and a charcuterie board. We entered the party early and made sure to kick it off right with a little joy. That’s how we fashionistas do it.
